BOSTON – A building fire in a Dorchester residence Monday morning is being blamed on the careless disposal of a cigarette butt.
According to Boston Police, Officer Brendan Cahill responded to a radio call for a fire at 28 Crescent Ave. on Monday at 7: 52 a.m.
The
fire destroyed the front porch roof of the residence, Boston police said. All
residents were evacuated from the building. There were not injuries.
“The
fire was caused by careless disposal of cigarette butt on the roof,” Matt Colaneri,
the property manager, said dropping a bunch of burnt wood as he and two workers
were busy tearing out the roof.
He
said police and firefighters arrived in time to put out the fire in 20 minutes.
Colaneri estimated the damage at about $5,000, some of which was water damage
caused by fire hoses, he said.
“Now
we are going to replace the ceiling,” Colaneri said.
